My sister is going to love it here

It is 9am on Saturday and so far Chris and I have:

Taken the family on a walk
Gone grocery shopping
Had breakfast/coffee/chai
Fed Austin breakfast
Cleaned out the guest room for Jenni
Picked up the downstairs
Brushed teeth and got dressed
Done laundry

I guess that is the benefit of getting up at 5:30, so thanks Austin!

Last night we went to a porch party in our neighborhood. It was a lot of fun. Kids running around the house and cul de sac, older neighbors in the rocking chairs on the porch, and parents with babies sprawled on our quilt in the front.

Another set of parents and I inevitably got in a conversation about how Austin sleeps. In Boulder where a lot of my friends are, the fact that Austin is just now starting to sleep is pretty common. In our neighborhood, it seems like strict cry it out methods are taken and babies sleep through the night starting at 3 months. Given that this conversation was in our neighborhood, the response from this couple was expected (faces surprised, telling me I have to let him cry it out, that there is no reason for this type of behavior....). Last night however, I heard a new one.

The dad said, "When a baby weighs 9 lbs, they should be able to sleep through the night because they have enough fat."
Me: Smile politely
Him: He does weigh 9 lbs right?
His wife: Look at him, I'm sure he's 9...looking at me expectedly
Me: Welllll, ,he's actually 22 now.
Them: Look at me curiously
His wife: Well, that's a big baby!

Maybe he'll be sleeping through the night soon enough. Maybe he won't. Either way, I hope he keeps up his morning routine. The mornings just seem like this secret time of day when things get accomplished. I hope Jenni likes being let in on the secret!

This compels me to make several comments. Did you hear that, Chris? Good thing you lived in Boulder and not Erie when you were born. You should have been sleeping through the night since the day you were born.

Next time you are playing "Are you smarter than a 5th grader" (or similar game) you select the category 1st. grade measurements. You are not confident in your answer as you were up all night with Austin. Do not cheat off these particular neighbors because they are clearly idiots!

Finally, what time will you be here to deliver my groceries?

oooooh. I love that one! Except, the way I heard it, babies should sleep through the night by the time they double their birth weight. So, by the time B was 14.5 pounds she should have magically started sleeping 12 hours, right?? Too bad she can't do math or weigh herself yet...

She did give me a blissful 7 hours last night, though. So we're making progress.
